Finnen Medes is the deuteragonist of
Spira Caelix. Shy and polite, this unassuming boy holds unimaginable power, and whether he wants to bear this burden or not, his choices will come to shape the future of the world. He suffers from retrograde amnesia and cannot recall anything about his life other than vague impressions of his early childhood. That, combined with the fact that his first concrete memory is of waking up in a strange carriage that caught aflame, shrouds him in a thick fog of mystery.
Upon being saved from the aforementioned situation by one
Suelyn Shay, he becomes her traveling companion and is exposed to the many injustices of the world. Seeing the pain of others ignites a fire deep inside of his heart, and he finds himself overtaken with an ardent desire to ensure that those who would dare harm others see justice. This path that he walks is fraught with temptation, and one wrong step could render him worse than those he despises. All the while, his memories gradually return, and he begins to fear that who he once was may not have been so good after all...
Finnen is an extremely potent magic user who is both talented and practiced. Though he cannot recall how or where he was educated in the art of spellcraft, he retains the skills he was taught and is capable of combining runes in novel ways even on-the-fly. Though he is capable of manipulating the elements, he has a preference for magic in its rawest form, utilizing bursts of energy in his aural shade, often guiding them using circles inscribed with runes.
He always carries around his leather knapsack. Inside of it is a thick tome, known as the Siferin; it was with him when he first came to inside of that carriage. The occultic spells contained within its pages would be considered heretical by many, but few can interpret its dense runes and the ancient language in which it was penned. It will take Finnen himself quite some time to uncover its secrets.
Aside from the Siferin, his bag also holds a leatherbound journal in which he records all of the sights he wants to never forget. Finnen is a skilled artist, and he is most experienced with pencils. Other objects in the bag include a ruler, a bookbinder's knife, erasers, tortillions, soft sensory objects like wool balls, and a wooden totem carved into the shape of a duck painted an unrealistically bright chartreuse green.
Suelyn and Finnen are traveling companions who care about each other immensely. Since the day she first saved him from the strange burning carriage in which he was found trapped, Suelyn has sworn to protect Finnen. Finnen, on the other hand, genuinely looks up to Suelyn and admires her kindness, her moral character, and her seemingly endless wellspring of patience for other people, even when they piss her off. One day, she will have to make a promise to him that no friend should ever have to: to end his life if he strays from his path.
Azur and Finnen are traveling companions who have a rather peculiar, yet close relationship. Azur is Finnen's sworn blade, and while he is rough and tumble with others, he is always gentle with Finnen. While Suelyn helps guide Finnen's moral compass, Azur follows Finnen unquestioningly, and only when Finnen truly crosses the line does Azur ever dare to even consider defying him. Finnen is extremely attached to Azur and views him as both protector and cherished comrade.
